About the Book

This is the story of Mr. L, an orphan raised by a devoted Carmelite nun, drafted as a skilled sniper during the Vietnam War. The narrative covers his journey from language mastery and Little League baseball excellence to the discovery of hunting, marked by grief, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder.

Witness the emergence of innate talents and left-handedness amid providential and self-inflicted circumstances. Mr. L transitions from boyish freedom in orphanages to self-sacrifice for a patriotic mission, serving the poor and disenfranchised in adulthood.

Woven into the narrative is the therapeutic alliance between patient and physician, inviting readers to reflect on the wonders of the human brain, the joy of love, and the gift of life. The story raises poignant questions about descending into an abyss or finding restoration through faith, hope, love, and forgiveness—an exploration of brokenness and a portrait of faith, grace, and joy derived from giving and loving.

One of the most wonderful books I’ve ever read. It’s like a movie. It starts with the condition of human science with scientific facts and has places with true historic and political facts. It describes souls sufferings with an explanation of scientific and spiritual reasons. It has the excitement of suspense with ups and downs. I love it, enjoyed it so much that I am buying it for everyone’s birthday that I know.

The book gives a wonderful insight into the life of a psychiatrist and an almost serendipitous relationship he has with one of his patients. I am a firm believer that often times, life does not work out the way we had planned it. However, that does not mean we cannot be grateful and show appreciation for the experiences we have had along our journies. Dr. Khouzam's book exemplifies this worldview and depicts how sometimes these journies can result in two paths crossing at specific instances in time that can result in wonderful and cherished memories.

A surprising and enlightening narrative of suffering ,guilt ,emotional turmoil and redemption.

This autobiographical account more than succeeds in dispelling the stereotype of a medical authority in a white coat or dark suit. The author's gentle and scholarly style based in Christian faith comes across while leaving the reader in suspense as his patient’s enthralling story progresses over the years. Tributes and insights gained from mentors and colleagues are graciously presented as pertaining to treating and counseling the hero, an emotionally traumatized Viet Nam Veteran who consented to share his uplifting story. Anecdotes beginning with Dr Khouzam's Egyptian school, a Fulbright scholarship, and continuing with medical school education and clinical experience abroad and in the US are combined with profound literary, historical, and Christian insights. Medical professionals and counsellors in many healthcare arenas including schools and churches can gain from insights on ways to assess, treat, encourage, empower, mentor, share, and congratulate patients and clients.

From Brokenness to atonement, Faith, Hope, And Love This is a masterfully written book by Professor Hani R. Khouzam, MD. The author is an accomplished clinician and academician who has dedicated his career to helping those who are suffering mentally. The book describes an amazing doctor/patient relationship over an extended period of time. The patient had symptoms suggestive of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) but did not believe he actually had the disorder. The patient was absolutely riddled with guilt and was in complete despair, harboring a strong and consistent wish to die. The book, artfully, describes the journey from despair to regaining faith and healing. As you embark on this journey you will travel to Egypt, England, Ireland, New Zealand, Laos, and the states of Oklahoma, New Hampshire, California, and Washington DC. What was most amazing about the book is the embedded education throughout. I learned much about topics I thought I knew well like the Myth of Isis-Osiris in Egyptian mythology to topics that were completely new to me like Bibliotherapy. Suffice it to say that the book caused me to add quite a long list of books that I need to read. The book is easy to read and is immensely enjoyable. It is recommended to everyone who is concerned with any aspect of human suffering and the power of love and faith in conquering even the worst states of despair. Nash N. Boutros, MD Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry, RUSH University Health Sciences Center, Chicago.

With the psychopharmacological revolution in full swing, fewer and fewer psychiatrists are, as they once were, masters of story-telling. Dr. Khouzam has brilliantly reclaimed and reanimated this story-telling tradition in psychiatry. With deep respect for each 'patient as teacher,' and an ability to penetrate patients' most hardened exteriors with compassion, kindness, and gentleness, Dr. Khouzam weaves a series of spell-binding, quite charming, sometimes quirky, and always illuminating clinical tales from which all who journey with him will benefit. His colorful, fascinating, variegated illustrations of how relationship, creativity, and authentic care, can result in healing, along with his keen observational abilities are animated by a child-like wonder yoked with decades of clinical wisdom . Dr. Khouzam's wise and whimsical reflections will draw in readers on every page and guide them deeper into his clinical world - a world in which every interaction is suffused with dignity, care, discovery, and an appreciation for each individual's genuine humanity.

Medical Tales and stories of healing and recovery, by Hani R Khouzam, MD Inspirational, educational and entertaining. This is my second book from this author who combines his clinical skills as a psychiatrist with his academic and scholarly knowledge. In this easy reading (you can finish the book in one setting!) collection of very interesting conditions, the author also infuses a rare spiritual dimension making reading this book a real uplifting experience. There are nineteen cases described in the book, in almost all of them, the author skilfully narrates how love and care can drastically alter the trajectories of what would otherwise be tragic endings. So, for your next train or plane ride, take “Medical Tales” along. It will make your trip that much more enjoyable.
